No Energy Savings From My Cool Roof – What Gives?

Okay, so you installed a cool roofing system, but since the building already had so much insulation you haven’t noticed any energy savings. What’s the point?

True. High reflectivity is a key characteristic that helps keep buildings cooler and can reduce energy usage. As much as 40% less cooling energy may be needed for buildings that have highly-reflective roofs. But even if a building is very well insulated, here are some other valuable benefits from cool roofing:

Insulation can be 25%-50% more effective
Studies have shown that extremely high temperatures reduce the effective R-value of the most widely used types of insulation (Leonard & Leonard, 2005). Cooler surfaces help preserve and keep rooftop insulation materials cooler.

HVAC equipment can operate more efficiently
Inlet air temperatures can be 5-15 degrees cooler 30 inches above a cool roofing surface compared to a black surface. Most rooftop HVAC units are designed with efficiency ratings evaluated at 95ºF (York International, 2005); rooftop temperatures on a black surface can reach 160ºF or higher, meaning that HVAC units will not operate at peak efficiency.

Substrate deterioration may be slowed by as much as 75%
Ultraviolet and infrared radiation and moisture penetration accelerate substrate deterioration. A cool roofing system will reflect this radiation and help protect the substrate (Kirn et. Al., 1994).

Ambient interior temperatures can be up to 20ºF cooler than outside
Studies of worker performance with machine operation and high physical activity reveal that productivity drops 10% at 84ºF and 38% at 95ºF (Schweisheimer, W., 1962). So even if a building is not air conditioned occupants will still notice improved comfort on hot days.

DK Haney Roofing Works with CBS Channel 11 Studios on Roofing Project

On October 13, 2010, DK Haney Roofing rolled into the CBS Channel 11 Studios parking lot to commence work on the company’s latest roofing project.  The local CBS affiliate contacted DK Haney Roofing after discovering leaks in its current roof system which lead to their decision to replace the faltering 30,000 square foot roof.

When DK Haney Roofing sat down with CBS Channel 11 they recommended the industries leading roofing products, including Duro-Last® Roofing System, Built-up Roof Systems, and Modified Bitumen Roof System.  In the end CBS Channel 11 was sold on Duro-Last’s® Cool Zone Roofing System.

A black roof in Texas during the summer runs about 150 to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.  When the temperature outside is 95 degrees, a Duro-Last® Cool Zone Roofing System will not exceed 100 to 110 degrees.  Energy cost savings from a Duro Last® Roofing System can range from 5 to 40 percent depending on a buildings insulation, geographic location, and energy costs in that area.  CBS Channel 11 Studio’s new Duro-Last’s Cool Zone Roofing System will not only lower heating and cooling costs but will also provide a leak proof roof.  The Cool Zone Roofing System is also custom prefabricated, durable, backed by the industry’s best warranties, code compliant, and the best long-term roofing value.

For more information about DK Haney Roofing and their services and products, call 866-DRY IT IN or visit www.dkhaneyroofing.com.

*Roofing temperatures and cost savings are estimates and may vary depending on building insulation, geographic location, and energy costs in that area.

DK Haney Roofing Donates Roofing Material and Labor to Local Fort Worth Resident

During early September 2010, local Fort Worth resident, Verdis Clark called DK Haney Roofing for a roof estimate.  Little did he know he would be receiving a much needed gift during these hard economic times.

On Saturday, September 11 at 8:00 a.m., DK Haney Roofing will arrive at Mr. Clark's home to begin installing his donated roof on the front slope of his home.  The sales rep who received Mr. Clark's call realized he didn't have the resources to complete the job and proceeded to come up with a plan.  DK Haney Roofing, a local Fort Worth business saw this as an opportunity to give back to their community and offered to supply all roofing materials and labor associated with the project free of charge.

Mr. Clark, an elderly man on a fixed income has been working with Texas Department of Family Protective Services to replace his old and damaged roof.  The City has provided support and material costs to reroof his home but during the latter half of the summer the first roofing company working on the roof stopped showing up and the job was left incomplete.

DK Haney Roofing understands the integrity associated with owning and operating a roofing business.  "In the roofing industry there are no excuses,"  commented Dustin K. Haney, CEO and President of DK Haney Roofing.  "People need roofs over their head to work, live, and play."

DK Haney Roofing Begins Work on Colorado ISD Roofing Project

On August 16, 2010, DK Haney Roofing began work on Colorado Independent School District's (ISD) roofing repair and renovations project.  The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2010 and will include six school and administrative buildings, including Kelley Elementary School, Colorado Middle School, Hutchinson Elementary School, Hutchinson Administrative Building, Wallace High School, and Colorado City High School.

As a member of the Interlocal Purchasing System (TIPS/TAPS), Colorado ISD was able to eliminate some of the district's project costs by avoiding the bidding process.  Additional project funding was also generated through hail damage claims.  In the end, Colorado ISD saved an estimated $800,000.
"In this day of trying to control costs, purchasing cooperatives, such as TIPS/TAPS have become very important to school districts.  The cost savings eliminated through TIPS/TAPS can then be used directly in the classroom or for some other districts need,"  commented Ronnie Kincaid, Executive Director of Region 14 Education Service Center.  "DK Haney Roofing is a qualified vendor that TIPS/TAPS members can utilize.  I have used DK Haney Roofing, and I have been very pleased with the workmanship, quality materials, and the services I have received from the entire organization."
During July 2010, DK Haney Roofing, a local roofing company in Fort Worth, Texas was awarded the Colorado ISD roofing project.  DK Haney Roofing is experienced in all types of commercial, industrial, and residential roofing systems and are also recognized as one of the top Duro-Last® Roofing contractors in the United States.  Duro-Last® is the recommended roofing material for the Colorado ISD project.  As the "World's Best Roof"®, Duro-Last® roofing system will provide Colorado ISD with leak proof roofs and drastically reduce heating and cooling costs.
